Let me start, with my conclusion - The decision by the Woolworths board and management to launch Masters was a sound one. A very sound idea indeed. That the strategy and execution was flawed, is now patent.

How do I come to this position?  Firstly, a lot of retail leadership recognize that in this pace of change, the risk of inactivity is a high one. One must surely have some empathy for the Woolworths board and management’s decision, looking at the rise and rise of Bunnings. To do nothing would be negligent in a sector that seemed to have no limit to growth, and was dominated by one larger player, Bunnings, and a fragmented second tier of hardware retail brands with no second player in the space.
