Don’t do what Amazon does, do the opposite! January 25, 2016 22:00

When I was running DealsDirect in the noughties, the saying especially amongst pure play retailers was always “ do what Amazon does”  - A recognition that Amazon was (and is) setting the bar of best practice and if you broadly tracked their methodologies albeit on a much smaller scale of course, you were on the right track. Wrong.

Since then, Amazon have shown themselves to be unassailable, developing capabilities that are beyond all retailers, big or small, global or local. What prompted me to write this post was an email I received recently from a friend and much respected Australian retailer who had just toured Seattle meeting with US retailers. He writes that “big retailers were interested in how we Australians organise ourselves and work together, essentially against Amazon, which it appears is all consuming here” Whilst I understand the preoccupation, my sense is that the way to “ beat” Amazon is to move as quickly as possible into what Amazon doesn’t do!
